Facebook Messenger

Facebook bietet einen eigenen Messenger an, der mit der Social-Media-Plattform verbunden ist. Deshalb benötigt man einen Facebook-Account. Durch diese Verbindung ist es möglich, dass man auch von völlig fremden Personen, vorausgesetzt sie haben einen Facebook-Account, Nachrichten empfangen kann, wenn man dies nicht explizit in den Einstellungen ausgeschaltet hat. Eine Änderung des angezeigten Kontaktnamen ist in den Messengereinstellungen zwar möglich, wird aber im Chat selbst angezeigt, so dass der betroffene Kontakt die Änderung auch sieht. Möchte man Ende-zu-Ende verschlüsselt kommunizieren, muss man einen separaten „geheimen Chat“ öffnen. Die Verschlüsselung ist keine Standard-Einstellung und auch nicht für Gruppen-Nachrichten verfügbar.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp ist der in Europa bekannteste und am Smartphone meistgenutzte Messenger-Dienst. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass eigene Kontakte diese App installiert haben, ist sehr groß und die Kernfunktionen, die ein Messenger mitbringen sollte, orientieren sich aufgrund des Bekanntheitsgrades an WhatsApp. Nach wiederholter Kritik, die den Datenschutz der App betraf, haben die Entwickler zwar offiziell Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung eingeführt. Laut Brian Acton, den Mitgründer von WhatsApp, ist dies aber auch bald hinfällig. Nach der Übernahme von WhatsApp durch Facebook gab es eine vertragliche Abmachung, dass WhatsApp die ersten 5 Jahre in den Händen von Facebook weiterhin kein Geld abwerfen muss. Im Februar 2019 lief diese Frist ab. Brian Acton behauptet, Facebook plane bereits die Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung aufzuweichen um gezielt Werbung im Status der Nutzer platzieren zu können.
